Why This Area Is Different

A building whose predecessor now stands in another country entirely

Before the Gherkin ever existed, this site held the Baltic Exchange. This was a Victorian shipping market where ship owners and brokers once traded freight prices. In 1992, an IRA bomb detonated close by. It badly damaged the historic structure. Instead, the Exchange couldn't afford the cost of restoring it. Even so, rather than let the building vanish entirely, its facade and main hall were carefully dismantled, piece by piece, and shipped abroad. They were eventually reconstructed in Tallinn, Estonia, where parts of a Victorian City institution now sit within that city's own commercial district, a genuinely unusual form of architectural afterlife.

What replaced it on St Mary Axe wasn't the first idea put forward. An earlier scheme proposed a 92-storey tower instead. It would have briefly ranked as the tallest building in Europe. Concerns about flight paths from nearby airports killed that plan outright. Something considerably more modest in height, if not in ambition, took its place instead.

A Name Toned Down From Something Ruder

Norman Foster's eventual design drew inspiration from older ideas. Decades earlier, Buckminster Fuller had developed something called a Climatroffice, a building intended to sustain its own internal microclimate through a free-form glass skin. Even so, the finished tower manages its temperature in a similar spirit, venting warm air out during summer and drawing it in during colder months. So, the building's familiar nickname has its own slightly cheekier backstory. According to reporting at the time, Gherkin was actually a toned-down version. Design critics had first called it something rather more suggestive, before the friendlier name stuck. The finished building went on to win a unanimous vote for the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2004, a genuinely rare outcome for architecture's most contested award. We're considerably less interested in prizes. A lock near St Mary Axe gets fixed properly, whatever the building around it happens to be called.

What this area brings us

Offices Around A Landmark Tower

Even so, close to the tower itself, a dense cluster of commercial tenants defines this area. Security here reflects that density, approached individually rather than generically. Book ahead

Period Buildings Beside Modern Glass

Even so, in genuine contrast to the tower nearby, older buildings still line parts of this area. We treat each on its own merits, never as interchangeable doors. Book ahead

Shops & Cafés Serving Office Workers

Even so, daytime trade here depends heavily on the surrounding offices staying busy. A fast lock replacement keeps a jammed unit from losing that custom.

Evening Lockouts

This area goes quiet quickly once office workers head home for the day. We answer just the same, regardless of the hour.

A brief point on scope: we don't duplicate keys, and we don't set up card or intercom access systems. Both belong with the building's managing agent instead.

Locked Out Near St Mary Axe

Office hours' pace, then a quiet evening

Dense commercial activity keeps this area busy through most of the working day.

Come evening, the pace drops sharply, leaving the surrounding streets notably calm.

Neither extreme changes our method. Every softer option gets a genuine try first, with force held back as an absolute last step.

Our fix depends entirely on what's happened to your key. Our broken keys page and lost keys page cover each situation separately.

What Survives A Demolition, And Where It Ends Up

One building's loss became another city's gain

Few redevelopments leave a trail stretching to another country entirely. This one genuinely does, with pieces of a Victorian City institution now standing on a different coastline altogether.

The Baltic Exchange's destruction and its building's afterlife are covered by this account of the site's history. The Gherkin's own design influences are explored by this architectural guide to the tower.

Legacy matters less to us than condition. A lock near St Mary Axe gets judged purely on how it's actually performing, new building or old.

Why People Call Us

What this area's tenants and residents rely on us for

  • Current state, not past glory. A notable backstory doesn't determine what a door actually needs.

  • Residential jobs aren't an afterthought. A flat gets the same care as an office.
  • We're upfront about what we don't do. Spare keys and card systems go elsewhere.
  • Time of day isn't a factor. We answer just as readily at 3am as at 3pm.
