A Gate Nobody Can Fully Explain
Locksmith EC4R: The Watergate Whose Name Stayed A Mystery
Dowgate was one of only four watergates through the old City wall, and nobody has ever settled where half its name came from. Three livery halls still stand where it once opened onto the river. Call 020 8534 4949 for a locksmith who knows this quieter corner of the City.

Why EC4R Is Different
A gate whose own name defeated the historians
EC4R centres on Dowgate Hill and Queen Street, a quieter stretch of the City running down towards the river. Its name comes from Dowgate itself, one of only four watergates that once let the Thames directly through London's defensive wall. Merchants and goods passed through here for centuries, and by 1320 Dowgate Ward was, by one surviving tax record, the richest ward in the entire City.
What nobody has ever fully settled is where the name actually comes from. Gate is obvious enough as a second half. Specialists in London street names have puzzled over the first half for generations, with no explanation ever sticking. Long after the physical structure disappeared, the street and the ward both still carry its unexplained name.
Three Halls That Outlasted Their Neighbours
Dowgate Hill once held a genuine cluster of livery company halls: Tallow Chandlers', Skinners', Innholders', and for a time Joiners' and Dyers' too. Only three survive today. Skinners' Hall has occupied the same site for more than 700 years, among the longest unbroken tenures of any livery company anywhere in the City, and the building is both Grade I listed and a scheduled ancient monument in its own right. Tallow Chandlers' Hall and Innholders' Hall still stand close by, each with centuries of their own history behind them.
So this small stretch of the City held onto its river gate's name even after losing the gate itself, and held onto three of its medieval halls even after losing the rest. We take a similar view of what's worth keeping: a working lock doesn't need replacing just because something grander nearby has changed.

The calls that come from this part of the City
Offices Along Queen Street & Dowgate Hill
Smaller office buildings line these quieter lanes, each with its own entrance to look after. We provide commercial security suited to a lower-footfall postcode.

Some buildings here sit close by centuries-old neighbours and carry older hardware themselves. A patient lock repair respects that setting.

Footfall in EC4R falls well short of what Cannon Street or Bank sees, so being shut out here can leave you genuinely stranded. We respond just as fast regardless.
Same-day priorityFlats Among The Offices
Among the commercial stock sit a small number of homes, and each one is assessed on its own merits rather than grouped in with the offices around it.

A snapped key in an older building here rarely comes free on its own. Our broken keys page covers the careful way we get it out.

Once the working day ends, this postcode empties out almost entirely. Our night line covers exactly that gap.
Call nowA point of clarification: cutting keys and configuring access-card or intercom systems both fall outside what we do. Speak to the managing agent's own suppliers for those.
Locked Out In EC4R
A quiet postcode with fewer people to turn to
Even during the working week, Dowgate Hill and Queen Street see nowhere near the crowds of Cannon Street or Bank nearby.
Because of that, being locked out here can feel lonelier than on a busier road, with fewer people walking past and fewer doors to knock on.
That doesn't change our method: every gentle option gets tried first, and a drill is only ever the last step.
Whether the key has snapped or genuinely gone missing changes what we do next, and we've written up both scenarios: broken keys here, lost keys there.

What Survives, And Why
Three halls out of five, one name out of a mystery
Not everything on Dowgate Hill made it this far. Two of the original five halls are gone, and the gate itself vanished centuries ago. What's left, kept its place through luck as much as merit, in some cases.
A fuller account of the street's livery history sits on The Street Names blog's piece on London's livery companies. Skinners' Hall tells its own 700-year story on its own history page.
We apply the same thinking to a lock as the street does to its halls: if it's still doing its job properly, there's rarely a reason to replace it just for the sake of it.
Not sure whether your own lock needs repair or replacement? Describe what it's doing and we'll tell you honestly.

Access & Traffic
Getting to you along a quieter stretch of the City
Dowgate Hill and Queen Street carry far less traffic than the main roads around them, which usually means easier parking and a quicker approach for a van.
Cannon Street and Mansion House stations both sit within a short walk, giving a second route in if the roads themselves are unusually busy.
Being quieter also means less passing footfall, so we rely more on clear directions from you than on simply finding the right doorway by eye.

Common Questions
The Gate Nobody Can Fully Explain
Was Dowgate genuinely one of the City's main gates?
Yes, one of only four original watergates through the old City wall, opening directly onto the Thames.
Do historians agree on where the name comes from?
Not entirely. The first part, 'dow', has never been satisfactorily explained, even by specialists in London street names.
Is there still a physical gate standing today?
No. The gate itself is long gone, though the street and ward still carry its name.
Three Halls That Outlasted Their Neighbours
How long has Skinners' Hall stood on this exact spot?
Over 700 years, making it one of the longest continuous occupations of any livery company site in the City.
Were there originally more halls on Dowgate Hill than there are now?
Yes. Joiners' and Dyers' halls once stood nearby too, but only three of the original cluster survive.
Which three livery halls are still there today?
Skinners' Hall, Tallow Chandlers' Hall and Innholders' Hall all remain in use.
Booking On Dowgate Hill
Which streets does EC4R actually cover?
Dowgate Hill, Queen Street and the surrounding lanes down towards the river.
Do you work on livery halls and similar historic buildings?
Only where we're asked in directly by the hall itself or its own management, not otherwise.
Is this mostly an office postcode, or are there homes too?
Mostly offices, with a small number of residential entrances scattered among them.
Can you reach a lockout on a quiet City lane like this?
Yes. Quieter streets are no obstacle, and we know this part of the City well.
Is evening cover realistic in such a quiet postcode?
Yes, our availability doesn't change based on how busy or quiet the street is.
What if my building has restricted access out of hours?
Describe the arrangement beforehand and we'll plan the visit around it.
Three halls outlasted the rest. We'd like your lock to do the same.
