A Gatehouse, A Print Shop, Two Different Revolutions

Locksmith Clerkenwell: Knights, Then Revolutionaries

One building here was a crusader order's gatehouse, now an ambulance charity's headquarters. Another was a small print shop where a Russian exile edited a newspaper, now a library named after Marx. Call 020 8534 4949 for a locksmith who knows this district's genuinely odd layers.

Why Clerkenwell Is Different

A crusader order's gatehouse, a Marxist library's home

St John's Gate has stood, in one form or another, at the entrance to Clerkenwell Priory since the 1140s. The Knights Hospitaller, an order founded in Jerusalem to care for sick pilgrims before taking on a military role, made this their English headquarters. Their original gatehouse was burned down during the Peasants' Revolt of 1381, rebuilt, then reconstructed again in its present form by Prior Thomas Docwra in 1504.

The building outlived the order's original purpose here by centuries. Painter William Hogarth spent part of his childhood in the gatehouse in the early 1700s, back when his father ran a coffee house inside it where only Latin was permitted. Later still, the same rooms served as the editorial office of the Gentleman's Magazine, where Samuel Johnson himself worked. Today the gate belongs to the modern St John Ambulance charity, its upper rooms now a museum tracing the whole strange arc from crusading knights to first-aid volunteers.

A Print Shop That Became A Different Kind Of Library

A short walk away, a much smaller building carries an equally unlikely history. In 1902, a Russian exile named Vladimir Ulyanov, writing under the name Jacob Richter, began editing a newspaper called Iskra from a modest office at 37a Clerkenwell Green. He's better known to history as Lenin. Local printer Harry Quelch supplied the press; Lenin supplied the copy, smuggled back into Russia to reach readers there.

He's said to have first crossed paths with Joseph Stalin nearby, at a pub on the same green, though historians still debate whether that meeting genuinely happened as described. What's certain is that the building itself survives, now home to the Marx Memorial Library, its original office preserved much as it was. So within a few hundred yards, Clerkenwell holds a gatehouse built for medieval crusaders and a print shop that briefly hosted the editing of a revolutionary newspaper, each building now serving a purpose its original occupants never imagined. We work on properties shaped by every layer of that history, whichever century they happen to date from.

What Clerkenwell Residents & Businesses Call About

The jobs this district actually brings in

Georgian & Victorian Terraces

Older housing stock around the Green carries ironmongery that's survived several generations of tenants. A patient lock repair keeps that intact.

Converted Warehouse Flats

Clerkenwell's industrial past left plenty of former workshops now split into homes. A proper lock replacement suits a change of use like that.

A quick scope note: we handle physical locks and door hardware — fitting jobs, repairs, full replacements. Cutting keys isn't part of that, and a building's shared entry system is a matter for its managing agent.

Locked Out In Clerkenwell

What to expect from a Clerkenwell lockout

Near the Green's older terraces, expect a frame that's been through several rounds of repair long before we arrive. We start by establishing what's genuinely there, not by guessing off the building's age.

Warehouse conversions tell a different story: often a sturdier original door on the outside, paired inside with hardware chosen for a much newer residential fit-out.

Either way, patience beats brute force. Working through the gentler options first is what keeps a drill out of most jobs on this patch.

A key sheared clean in two is ordinarily a faster problem to solve than one that's actually vanished. Our broken keys and lost keys guidance explains why.

A District That Keeps Changing Hands

What survives when a building's whole purpose changes

Clerkenwell's habit of repurposing its own buildings goes well beyond these two examples. A local history piece on Lenin's time on Clerkenwell Green traces just how ordinary this pattern is for the area, where one century's headquarters becomes the next century's museum, library or charity office.

That habit matters for lock work because a building's current use rarely tells you what's actually behind the door. A converted print shop, a former monastic gatehouse, and a plain Victorian terrace can all sit within a few streets of each other, each with hardware suited to a different era entirely.

We'd rather ask what a building actually is than guess from its frontage. Two doors that look alike from the pavement can hide very different mechanisms.

Access & Traffic

Getting to you across this district

Clerkenwell's streets were largely laid out long before motor traffic existed, and several remain genuinely narrow around the Green itself. An engineer who knows the layout plans the final approach on foot rather than assuming a straightforward drive-up.

Parking directly outside is rarely simple given how tight the historic street pattern is here, so we generally leave the van a short distance away.

Excellent transport links, including Farringdon station nearby, help offset the tighter road network, and we factor both into how quickly we can reach you.

Why People Call Us

Why locals keep calling us back

  • We ask before assuming. Appearance rarely tells you what's actually fitted.
  • Patience over power tools. A drill is the last resort, not the first idea.
  • Familiar with every era here. Medieval, Georgian or modern, we treat each properly.
  • Homes or businesses, no difference in care. Residential and commercial jobs get the same attention.
  • Honest about what we won't do. No key cutting, no access-control tampering.
  • Genuinely available around the clock. Whatever hour, we pick up.

Common Questions

St John's Gate & The Priory

Is the gatehouse genuinely medieval, or mostly a later rebuild?

Both, in a sense. It stands on a medieval site and follows a 1504 design, though much of the visible stonework reflects careful Victorian restoration.

Did the original gatehouse actually get destroyed at one point?

Yes. Rebels burned the earlier building during the Peasants' Revolt of 1381, and it had to be rebuilt.

Is it true a famous painter grew up there?

Yes, William Hogarth spent part of his childhood in the gatehouse while his father ran a coffee house on the premises.

Did the gatehouse have any other unusual uses over the centuries?

Yes, it later served as the editorial office of a well-known 18th-century magazine, and even spent time as a tavern before that.

Clerkenwell Green's Revolutionary Chapter

Did Lenin genuinely live and work in Clerkenwell?

He worked here, editing a newspaper from a small office on Clerkenwell Green for about a year, though his lodgings were a short distance away in a different part of London.

Is the story about meeting Stalin nearby definitely true?

It's widely repeated locally, but historians treat the exact details as unconfirmed rather than settled fact.

What happened to the building afterward?

It's now a library and museum focused on the history connected to that period, with the original office still viewable inside.

Booking In Clerkenwell

Do you cover the whole district, not just the streets right by the Green?

Yes — every corner of it, not just the streets closest to the Green.

Can you reach a lockout quickly given how narrow some streets are?

Yes, we're used to the layout and plan the final stretch on foot where needed, without it slowing us down.

What if I'm not sure which category my building falls into historically?

There's no need to work that out yourself. Just describe the building, and we'll take it from there in person.

Is genuine out-of-hours cover available across the whole district?

Yes. This part of London rarely settles down for long, and our hours are set up to match it.

Do you charge more for a callout near a listed or historic building?

No, pricing reflects the job itself, not the reputation of the address.

Crusaders once, revolutionaries later. Us, whenever you need us.

Georgian terrace or warehouse conversion, home or business — call or drop us a message and we'll match an engineer to this district's odd, layered history.
