Why Curtain Road Is Different
A name from the stage, a living from timber
Curtain Road takes its name from the Curtain playhouse, an Elizabethan theatre that opened nearby in 1577 and briefly hosted Shakespeare's own company. That story, including the theatre's rediscovery centuries later, is covered in full on our EC2A page, so we won't repeat it here. What this particular street became afterward is a different story entirely, and arguably a longer one.
So, by around 1850, a timber merchant named James Latham had established a yard at the corner of Curtain Road and Rivington Street, supplying wood to London's furniture makers on an industrial scale. The business grew to include its own saw-mill, with separate departments for veneers and moulding, feeding the workshops and showrooms that came to define this entire district. Even so, in 1892, a fire tore through much of the site, destroying a significant part of what had been built up over four decades. The yard was rebuilt rather than abandoned, continuing to store hardwood and veneer until the firm eventually relocated to Clapton sometime between 1920 and 1940.
A Warehouse Built For Empire
Meanwhile, further along the same street stands The Harrison, at 134 to 146 Curtain Road, a Grade II listed building dating from 1881. It's counted among the finest surviving examples of Victorian commercial architecture in Shoreditch, and for good reason: furniture made and finished inside its walls was once distributed not just across Britain but throughout the British Empire. Most of the grand showroom-warehouses that once lined this street followed a similar pattern, built to display and dispatch furniture on a genuinely global scale.
So this road carries two distinct inheritances: a borrowed name from a theatre that burned briefly in the public imagination, and a century of timber, fire and trade that actually built the street's own fabric. We're concerned with neither directly. We just want the doors on whatever's standing here now to work properly.

What Curtain Road Businesses & Residents Call About
What this stretch brings us
Converted Showroom Buildings
What used to be furniture warehouses now hold a genuinely diverse set of tenants. Each building gets its own security review, independent of its former use.

Many of these converted spaces trade well into the evening, needing doors that hold up under constant use. A dependable repair isn't optional once the evening crowd arrives.
Same-day priorityDesign & Creative Studios
Smaller studios along this stretch often turn over faster than a typical office lease. A quick lock replacement between tenants keeps that process simple.

A handful of residential entrances sit tucked among the converted commercial stock here. Each one gets its own assessment, not grouped in with the units nearby.

Getting a snapped key out of this stretch's older locks takes genuine care. See our guide for exactly how we approach it.
Call nowLate-Night Lockouts
Genuinely late hours define this stretch, well beyond when quieter nearby streets wind down. Our turnout holds steady regardless.

Locked Out On Curtain Road
Busy trading hours, a livelier night than most
Commercial traffic stays fairly constant along this stretch through the working day.
Once evening arrives, the picture changes, drawn into Shoreditch's broader scene of bars and late venues.
Neither pattern changes how we operate. Patience gets a full chance before a drill is ever brought out.
What's actually happened to your key decides our next move. A snapped key and a missing one are covered on their own separate pages.

What We Do
Services across Curtain Road
What Burned, What Remained
A fire didn't end the trade, it just rebuilt around it
Trades built on timber and fire don't always survive both in the same century. This one did, rebuilding after 1892 rather than folding, and kept supplying furniture makers for decades afterward.
The wider furniture trade's own story along this stretch is told by this account of Shoreditch's Victorian warehouses. James Latham's own timber business is recorded in detail by this furniture trade history.
A lock earns similar patience from us. So long as it still works, there's little reason to replace it simply because the building around it has moved on to something else.

Why People Call Us
What Curtain Road tenants and residents rely on us for
- We go by the door, not the backstory. What a building used to be rarely matters to what's fitted now.
- Soft methods first, every time. A drill waits until genuinely nothing else has worked.
- Layered buildings don't faze us. Multiple past lives in one structure is routine territory.
- Flats get the same weight as offices. Residential work matches commercial work, call for call.
- We name our limits plainly. Spare keys and access-card setup sit elsewhere.
- Available regardless of hour. A heaving trading day or a dead quiet night, same response.
