Why EC2M Is Different

A company's whole rise and fall happened within one calendar year

EC2M covers the ground around Liverpool Street and the northern stretch of Bishopsgate, and at the corner where Threadneedle Street meets that stretch once stood South Sea House, headquarters of the South Sea Company. Incorporated in 1711, the company was granted a monopoly on British trade with Spanish America. Spain's own restrictions meant that monopoly was worth far less than investors assumed, but that detail hardly mattered once the speculation began.

In January 1720, South Sea shares traded around £128. By August they'd passed £1,000, fuelled by rumour, royal patronage, and no shortage of ordinary investors hoping to get rich quickly. By December, the price had collapsed back to roughly £124. Thousands were ruined in the space of eleven months. The company had itself pushed for the Bubble Act of 1720, a law requiring royal charter for new joint-stock companies, shortly before its own collapse made the need for such regulation painfully obvious.

A Clerk Who Borrowed His Pen Name From The Office Next To His

Decades later, the rebuilt South Sea House employed a young clerk named Charles Lamb, who went on to become one of the era's best-loved essayists. He later moved to a post at East India House, but it was here, among South Sea's ledgers, that he first worked. When he needed a pen name for his writing, he borrowed it from a colleague at the company: a fellow clerk called Elia. The original building didn't survive much longer than its most famous employee's tenure there. Fire damaged it in 1826, alterations followed in the 1850s, and by the century's end it had been demolished entirely.

So this corner of the City saw a fortune made and lost within a single year, and, in its own quieter way, gave English literature a pen name borrowed from an office colleague. We deal in smaller, steadier matters: making sure the doors here hold up rather better than South Sea's share price did.

What EC2M Residents & Businesses Call About

The calls this postcode generates

Financial Offices & Trading Floors

This postcode is thick with tenanted floors clustered around its stations. Commercial security work here has to account for the whole shared floor plan.

Rebuilt & Period Buildings

History here rarely sits still — many buildings show signs of more than one rebuild. We treat a repair job as a chance to work with that, not against it.

Book ahead

Ground-Floor Shops & Cafés

Early commuter footfall around Liverpool Street means these units rarely get a quiet start. Swapping a failed lock out fast keeps the morning rush from becoming a crisis.

Same-day priority

Flats Among The Offices

Scattered among the commercial blocks are a few residential doors, and we approach each one individually rather than treating them as an afterthought.

Broken Or Snapped Keys

Aging cylinders in older buildings here tend to grip a broken key rather than release it. Our broken keys page walks through how we free one carefully.

Weekend Lockouts

Come the weekend, this largely commercial postcode goes quiet fast. That doesn't stop us answering a lockout call regardless.

Call now

To set expectations early: our remit is physical locks and doors. If you need keys cut or a card system programmed, that's a different trade to call.

Locked Out In EC2M

A postcode that fills fast and empties faster

Weekdays bring real pace to Liverpool Street and this stretch of Bishopsgate, so a locked door tends to draw notice fast.

Evenings and weekends are another matter entirely. The pace drops off sharply, and there's less passing help to rely on if something goes wrong.

Neither scenario changes how we handle the door itself: patience and the right technique beat force, almost every time.

Whether it's a snapped key or a properly lost one, the fix looks quite different. Broken keys and lost keys are covered separately on their own pages.

Speculation Versus Steadiness

What a financial bubble has to do with a front door

A bubble runs on confidence that outpaces anything it's actually built on. A lock works on the opposite principle entirely: it either holds under real pressure or it doesn't, and no amount of enthusiasm changes which.

Vic Keegan's account of South Sea House's Threadneedle Street site tells the fuller story of the crash itself. Charles Lamb's own life, pen name included, is covered in his Wikipedia entry.

We don't guess a building's era from its facade alone. What's actually fitted gets checked properly first.

If you can't tell what's wrong with your own door, describe the symptoms and we'll give you our honest take.

The Process

Booking a locksmith EC2M callout

  • Contact usThe address, which unit, and a brief line on the problem.
  • Access gets sortedWhere a building needs sign-off first, we arrange that before anything else.
  • The engineer inspectsA price only gets quoted once the door's actually been seen.
  • Confirmed before we goThe lock and door both get tested, not just assumed to work.

Access & Traffic

Getting to you around a major interchange

Liverpool Street and this end of Bishopsgate rank among the busiest parts of the City on a weekday, with heavy bus and pedestrian traffic through most of the day. Loading restrictions apply throughout.

Because Liverpool Street station sits directly within this postcode, arriving by train frequently proves quicker than sitting in surface traffic.

The character shifts noticeably at weekends, with far fewer people about even as a handful of shops carry on trading. We adjust our routing for that.

Why People Call Us

What EC2M tenants and residents rely on us for

  • We don't get swept up in confidence alone. A lock either holds or it doesn't, and we test rather than assume.
  • Patience beats force. We work through every gentler option before a drill comes out.
  • At ease with high-security premises. Extra procedures and checks don't hold us up.
  • Homes aren't an afterthought. A residential callout gets exactly the same care as a commercial one.
  • Clear about what we don't do. Spare keys and access-system setup aren't ours to handle.
  • Reachable at any hour. Packed weekday or silent Sunday, it's the same to us.

Common Questions

The Bubble Itself

Did share prices genuinely move that dramatically in a single year?

Yes. They rose from around £128 in January 1720 to over £1,000 by August, then collapsed to about £124 by December.

What was the company actually meant to be trading in?

A monopoly on British trade with Spanish America, though Spain's own restrictions meant it was never as valuable as investors assumed.

Did the crash cause any lasting change to company law?

Yes. It led to the Bubble Act of 1720, which required royal charter for new joint-stock companies, a law the South Sea Company itself had pushed for before its own collapse.

Charles Lamb's Years There

Did a well-known writer really work inside South Sea House?

Yes, Charles Lamb was a clerk there before later moving to East India House.

Where did his famous pen name actually come from?

He took it from the name of a fellow clerk at the company, a man called Elia.

Does the original building still stand?

No. It was rebuilt after a fire in 1826, altered again in the 1850s, and demolished entirely by the end of the century.

Booking In EC2M

Which streets does EC2M actually cover?

The stretch around Liverpool Street and northern Bishopsgate, plus the surrounding office streets between them.

Do you work on modern trading floors as well as older buildings?

We do. This postcode mixes the two genuinely, and each gets assessed separately.

Can you reach a lockout during a busy weekday?

We can, though on foot for the last part is common given how packed these streets get.

Is weekend cover realistic in a mostly commercial postcode?

Yes, seven days a week, whether or not the offices around you are open.

Do you handle flats as well as commercial premises here?

Yes, alongside the commercial work, which makes up the larger share of callouts here.

What if my building has its own security procedures?

Let us know what they involve beforehand, and we'll fit in with them.

Fortunes rose and fell here in a year. Your locks don't need to take the risk.
