Why EC4A Is Different
A street that never settled on its own story
EC4A covers Fetter Lane and New Fetter Lane, running between Holborn and Fleet Street at the western edge of the City's legal quarter. The street appears in records as far back as 1252, and by the late 1200s was being called Faitours Lane, or something close to it. What that name actually meant has never been settled.
The historian John Stow believed it came from fewters, old word for idle people who lounged about there. Others trace it instead to faitour, a Middle English term for a cheat or a fortune-telling impostor, which the Oxford English Dictionary treats as the more likely root. Separate theories point to felters, who made felt nearby, or feuterers, keepers of hunting dogs. A persistent folk explanation ties the name to fetters, claiming criminals were once kept chained here, and it isn't pure invention: a gibbet genuinely stood at the Fleet Street end in the 1590s. No single theory has ever won out over the rest.
A Society That Needed No Guesswork At All
Not everything about this street is uncertain. At number 33, a religious community called the Fetter Lane Society was formally established in 1738, bringing together members committed to discipleship and mutual accountability. It went on to support missionary work, and a Moravian chapel has stood on the site, carrying the street's connection to the society forward in a way its own name never managed.
So Fetter Lane has spent centuries arguing with itself over where its name came from, while quietly hosting something whose founding date nobody disputes at all. We'd rather deal in the second kind of certainty. A lock either secures a door properly or it doesn't, whatever story gets told about the street outside it.

Legal offices dominate here, but a few homes sit woven in between them. Each gets its own assessment, separate from the chambers around it.

This street's older locks don't give up a snapped key easily. See broken keys for the careful process we follow.
Call nowEvening Lockouts
The street goes quiet fast once the chambers shut for the evening. That makes no difference to us — we still turn out.
Call nowOutside our scope entirely: spare keys, and access-card or intercom programming. Instead, those go to your building's own facilities team.
Locked Out In EC4A
Legal hours by day, a different street by night
Working hours bring steady foot traffic along Fetter Lane, moving between chambers, offices and the Fleet Street end.
Once the day ends, though, that traffic drops away fast, and fewer people remain nearby to help if a door won't open.
Our method stays fixed regardless of the hour: every gentle option gets exhausted before a drill is even an option.
A snapped key and a missing one call for different fixes entirely. See our broken keys page for one, lost keys for the other.

Guesswork Versus Record
What's actually provable, and what isn't
A street name with five competing explanations tells you something: nobody wrote the real reason down at the time, and everyone since has been guessing from fragments. A society with a founding date doesn't leave that kind of gap.
The Street Names blog sets out the competing theories behind Fetter Lane in full. Wikipedia's entry on the street covers the Fetter Lane Society and its chapel.
Our own method follows a similar rule: find out what's actually true about a lock first, rather than guessing from its age alone.
If your own lock has you stumped, tell us what it's doing and we'll tell you honestly what we think.

Access & Traffic
Getting to you between Holborn and Fleet Street
Fetter Lane carries a steady flow of traffic between the two busier roads it connects, though side access to individual buildings can be tight. Loading restrictions apply throughout.
Chancery Lane and City Thameslink both lie close by, offering another way in when the street itself is unusually busy.
As the legal offices close in the evening, footfall here drops sharply, even while Fleet Street nearby stays relatively lively. Our routing reflects that.
Why People Call Us
What EC4A tenants and residents rely on us for
- We deal in what's provable. A lock's actual condition decides our approach, not assumptions about its age.
- Force is the last option, not the first. We exhaust gentler methods before a drill comes near a door.
- At ease in a legal-quarter postcode. Chambers with their own procedures are routine for us.
- Homes get proper attention too. A residential callout is handled with the same care as a commercial one.
- Scope stays clear from the start. Spare keys and access-system programming fall to others.
- Answering at any hour. Busy daytime or a quiet evening street, we pick up either way.

Do historians actually agree on where Fetter Lane got its name?
No. At least five separate theories exist, and none has ever fully won out over the others.

Probably not, by most scholarly accounts, though a real gibbet did once stand at the Fleet Street end in the 1590s.

Most trace it to 'faitour', an old word for a cheat or a fortune-telling impostor, rather than to chains at all.
