Why This Area Is Different

A railway terminal built where Germany once governed itself

Long before any railway arrived, this exact ground belonged to a self-governing German trading enclave known as the Steelyard. Merchants from Lubeck, Bremen and Hamburg controlled the site for centuries. They operated under their own rules, right inside the City itself. That arrangement finally ended in 1852, when those cities sold their interest specifically to the South Eastern Railway, clearing the way for the station that opened here in 1866.

What replaced the Steelyard was genuinely ambitious. The original train shed carried a semicircular glass and iron roof. It stretched roughly seven hundred feet, longer than the one covering nearby Charing Cross at the time. A grand hotel fronted the station from 1867 onward, designed by Edward Middleton Barry, the same architect responsible for the hotel at Charing Cross station, and son of Charles Barry, who designed the Houses of Parliament.

A Magnificent Structure, Reduced To Two Towers

That grandeur didn't last. The hotel closed to paying guests in 1931, converted instead into plain office space. The Second World War brought direct bomb damage in 1941, scarring both station and hotel badly. By 1958, the once-celebrated roof had been demolished entirely, with the hotel building itself following just two years later. Only the station's two original towers survived that decades-long decline. They were later granted listed status, then carefully restored.

We're considerably less concerned with grand architecture. A lock near London Cannon Street gets fixed properly. It doesn't matter what nation or century once claimed the ground beneath it.

What Businesses & Residents Near London Cannon Street Call About

What this area brings us

Offices Near A Major Terminal

Commercial tenants cluster densely close to the station itself, enough to feel its daily rhythm. Security here reflects that intensity, never applied generically.

Period Features Beside Rebuilt Structures

Entirely modern construction now sits beside whatever survives from the original 1866 complex. We treat each on its own terms, never as interchangeable doors.

Shops Serving A Dense Commuter Flow

Trade here rises and falls almost entirely with the volume passing through the station. A prompt lock replacement matters where downtime means lost custom fast.

Same-day priority

Flats Woven Into The Commercial Core

A small number of residential entrances persist among the offices here. Each gets assessed on its own merits, never folded into the commercial units nearby.

Broken Or Snapped Keys

The older locks here can be genuinely stubborn about releasing a broken key. Our guide explains the careful approach we take.

Evening Lockouts

This stretch empties out fast once the office day winds down. That timing makes no difference to us, whatever hour it strikes.

A brief point on scope: we don't duplicate keys here, nor do we programme card or intercom access systems. Those stay with the building's own managing agent.

Locked Out Near London Cannon Street

A dense working day, then a genuinely quiet night

Daytime brings heavy office traffic here, tied closely to the commuter volume this station has long carried.

Once that trade packs up for the evening, the area empties noticeably, far quieter than its daytime bustle would suggest.

Neither pattern changes how we work. Every gentle technique gets a genuine try before a drill is ever considered necessary.

What's wrong with your key shapes the fix entirely. Read this for a snapped one, this if it's vanished instead.

What A Nation Left Behind, And What Replaced It

Centuries of foreign governance, then a station that barely survived itself

Few stations can claim their own ground once operated under an entirely different country's rules. Fewer still then lost almost everything they built afterward to war and simple neglect.

The Steelyard's own history and the station that replaced it are covered by this detailed account of the site. The lost roof's full story is traced by this record of the original structure.

Our own standards stay considerably plainer than that history. Whether a lock works is the only thing that actually concerns us.

Something not right with your lock? Tell us the symptoms. We'll say plainly what's going on.
