A Statue Nobody Looks At Properly
Locksmith Old Bailey: Justice Without The Blindfold Everyone Assumes
Visitors routinely picture a blindfolded figure above this courthouse, yet she's never worn one, and an 18th-century building decision here once proved fatally mistaken. Call 020 8534 4949 for a locksmith who knows this area well.

Why This Area Is Different
A statue misread by almost everyone who looks up at it
High above the courthouse, a gilt bronze figure of Lady Justice holds a sword and a set of scales. Sculptor F.W. Pomeroy completed her in 1906. Most people assume she wears a blindfold, the usual artistic shorthand for impartial judgment. She doesn't. Look closely and there's nothing covering her eyes at all. The court's own official explanation leans on something rather unusual: her maidenly form, the brochures claim, already guarantees fairness, rendering a blindfold entirely redundant. It's a curious piece of institutional reasoning that's survived largely unchallenged for well over a century.
The building beneath her has its own history of getting things badly wrong, at least once with serious consequences. Back in 1674, the court was deliberately built without full enclosure, left open to the air specifically to stop disease spreading among crowded trial-goers. That logic held until 1734, when builders refronted the structure and properly enclosed it. Sixteen years later, in 1750, that decision proved catastrophic. A severe typhus outbreak tore through the enclosed court, killing roughly sixty people, including the sitting Lord Mayor and two judges outright.
A Walk Named For Exactly What It Was
Condemned prisoners once made a final journey along a passage connecting the adjoining Newgate Prison directly to the court. People grimly nicknamed that route Dead Man's Walk. Many of those who made that walk were buried within it afterward, their final steps and resting place genuinely one and the same. One tradition survives from that era in gentler form: every judge sitting at the Old Bailey today, whatever their formal rank, gets addressed simply as My Lord or My Lady. We're concerned with something considerably less ceremonial. A lock near the Old Bailey gets fixed properly, whatever tradition or tragedy happens to be attached to the building nearby.

Once court sessions and the working day both end, this area quietens considerably. That makes no difference to how fast we respond.

What A Building Gets Wrong About Itself
Assumptions that outlive the facts behind them
Few landmarks get misread quite as consistently as this one. A statue most people have never actually looked at closely keeps getting described the same inaccurate way, decade after decade.
The Lady Justice statue and the court's wider history are detailed by this record of the Old Bailey itself. Dead Man's Walk and the building's earlier years are explored further by this account of the site's past.
We're rather more careful about getting details right in our own work. A lock earns our attention by working properly, whatever misconception happens to persist about the building nearby.

Why People Call Us
What this area's tenants and residents rely on us for
- We check what's fitted, not the legend. A building's reputation doesn't change what's needed on the door today.
- Patient before forceful. A drill only comes out once nothing gentler has worked.
- Comfortable near a major courthouse. Visitor interest and extra foot traffic don't slow us down.
- Homes matter here too. A residential job gets exactly what a commercial one does.
- Clear about our limits. Spare keys and access-system setup go to someone else.
- Reachable at any hour. Busy court day or a quiet evening, it's the same to us.
