Why This Riverside Area Is Different
A design flaw that accidentally created a winter tradition
So, for roughly four centuries, the Thames near the City did something it hasn't managed in generations: it froze solid enough to walk across. Records show at least two dozen occasions between the 1400s and 1831 when the river iced over completely in central London. The cause wasn't simply cold weather. Old London Bridge's narrow arches sat on closely packed stone piers, known as starlings, which slowed the river's flow dramatically. In a hard enough winter, that sluggish water had every chance to freeze.
Even so, Londoners made the most of it. What became known as frost fairs sprang up directly on the ice, part market, part carnival. Stallholders set up booths selling food and drink. Entertainers offered bull-baiting and impromptu ice skating. Perhaps strangest of all, printers dragged entire presses out onto the frozen river and ran off souvenir pamphlets on the spot, something buyers could genuinely claim was printed on the Thames itself. One printer, George Davis, later published a 124-page book called Frostiana, entirely devoted to the phenomenon. Technically, none of it was even legal. Proper fairs required a royal charter, something these frozen gatherings never actually had.
The Freeze That Never Came Back
Eventually, the most famous and thoroughly documented frost fair took place in February 1814, lasting four days between Blackfriars and London Bridge before the ice finally broke apart. It turned out to be the last one London would ever see. In 1831, the old bridge came down, replaced by a wider structure with fewer, broader arches that let the tide move freely again. Embankment works through the rest of the century deepened and narrowed the river further still, removing the conditions that had made freezing possible in the first place. The Thames simply stopped behaving the way it once had. We're considerably less affected by weather in our own work. A lock gets fixed properly whatever the river outside happens to be doing, frozen solid or not.

Offices Facing The Embankment
Even so, buildings along this stretch often carry river views alongside their own access challenges. Security gets planned around that layout, not as an afterthought.

Even so, steady footfall along the embankment supports trade here throughout the day. A fast lock replacement keeps a jammed unit from losing that custom.

This riverside area quietens considerably once the working day ends. That timing makes no difference to us, whatever hour it is.

Daytime brings a steady mix of office workers and visitors drawn by the river itself.

A River That Changed Its Own Behaviour
What engineering quietly took away from this water
Even so, rivers don't usually stop doing something they've done for centuries. This one did, simply because the structures controlling its flow changed underneath it.
The full story of London's frost fairs is told by this account of seven centuries of frozen winters. The engineering reasons behind their disappearance are covered by this piece on the changing river itself.
Unlike any river, we stay entirely predictable. Either a lock works properly, or it doesn't, whatever the season happens to be doing.

Did the Thames genuinely freeze solid in London, historically?
