Why This Area Is Different
A building whose predecessor now stands in another country entirely
Before the Gherkin ever existed, this site held the Baltic Exchange. This was a Victorian shipping market where ship owners and brokers once traded freight prices. In 1992, an IRA bomb detonated close by. It badly damaged the historic structure. Instead, the Exchange couldn't afford the cost of restoring it. Even so, rather than let the building vanish entirely, its facade and main hall were carefully dismantled, piece by piece, and shipped abroad. They were eventually reconstructed in Tallinn, Estonia, where parts of a Victorian City institution now sit within that city's own commercial district, a genuinely unusual form of architectural afterlife.
What replaced it on St Mary Axe wasn't the first idea put forward. An earlier scheme proposed a 92-storey tower instead. It would have briefly ranked as the tallest building in Europe. Concerns about flight paths from nearby airports killed that plan outright. Something considerably more modest in height, if not in ambition, took its place instead.
A Name Toned Down From Something Ruder
Norman Foster's eventual design drew inspiration from older ideas. Decades earlier, Buckminster Fuller had developed something called a Climatroffice, a building intended to sustain its own internal microclimate through a free-form glass skin. Even so, the finished tower manages its temperature in a similar spirit, venting warm air out during summer and drawing it in during colder months. So, the building's familiar nickname has its own slightly cheekier backstory. According to reporting at the time, Gherkin was actually a toned-down version. Design critics had first called it something rather more suggestive, before the friendlier name stuck. The finished building went on to win a unanimous vote for the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2004, a genuinely rare outcome for architecture's most contested award. We're considerably less interested in prizes. A lock near St Mary Axe gets fixed properly, whatever the building around it happens to be called.

What Survives A Demolition, And Where It Ends Up
One building's loss became another city's gain
Few redevelopments leave a trail stretching to another country entirely. This one genuinely does, with pieces of a Victorian City institution now standing on a different coastline altogether.
The Baltic Exchange's destruction and its building's afterlife are covered by this account of the site's history. The Gherkin's own design influences are explored by this architectural guide to the tower.
Legacy matters less to us than condition. A lock near St Mary Axe gets judged purely on how it's actually performing, new building or old.
