Why Talbot Court Is Different

A dog replaced a jacket, and the court took the new name

Talbot Court runs east off Gracechurch Street, barely wide enough to notice unless you're actually looking for it. Its current name is a comparatively late arrival. Earlier records refer instead to a sign called The Tabarde, a reference to the sleeveless, square-collared jacket once worn by heralds. At some point that sign was swapped for a different one, showing a talbot, an old breed of hunting dog once common on English inn signs, and the court's own name simply followed suit.

Two separate pubs appear in historical listings for this address, standing almost on top of each other given how little space the court actually offers. One, the White Lion, sat at number one. The other, a pub called the Ship, has proven rather more durable.

Still Pouring, Centuries On

Records place a drinking house on the Ship's exact site before the Great Fire tore through London in 1666, making it one of the older continuous pub locations anywhere in the City, even though the building standing there today only dates from the 1800s. Trade directories and census records trace its licensees in unbroken detail from the early 1800s through to the late 20th century, barmaids, cellarmen and lodgers all logged along the way. Whatever the court was called at any given point, somebody has been pulling pints on this spot for the better part of four centuries. We're after something considerably less historic. A lock on Talbot Court gets fixed properly, whatever sign happens to be hanging above the door these days.

A small number of residential entrances exist among the commercial premises here. Each one gets a proper, individual look, regardless of how little space surrounds it.

Broken Or Snapped Keys

Older locks in this court can be stubborn about releasing a broken key. Our guide walks through exactly how we handle that with care.

Evening Lockouts

Office trade here fades fast come evening, though the pub itself keeps its own separate hours. We're available regardless of which applies.

Outside our remit: cutting spare keys, and wiring up a building's card or intercom system. Both are jobs for the managing agent's own contractors.

Locked Out On Talbot Court

An alley with two very different rhythms

Daytime brings office trade and people cutting through on foot, Gracechurch Street to Eastcheap and back.

Evening shifts the mood entirely, with the pub itself often the only real activity left on the court.

Either way, our method doesn't change. Gentle techniques get a full, genuine try before a drill ever becomes necessary.

What's gone wrong with your key decides how we approach it. See broken keys for one situation, lost keys for the other.

What A Pub Sign Can Tell You About A Street

A name borrowed from whatever happened to be hanging there

Plenty of London's smaller streets owe their names to a sign that's long since disappeared. Talbot Court is a genuinely good example, carrying the memory of a hunting dog nobody painted there for generations.

The Ship's own documented history is traced in detail by this record of the pub itself. The court's earlier name and its connection to the Tabarde sign is explained by this historical dictionary entry.

We're not especially concerned with old signage. A lock earns our attention by working properly, whatever name happens to be painted on the street sign outside.

Access & Traffic

Getting to you on Talbot Court

This court itself carries no real vehicle traffic, with access almost entirely on foot from Gracechurch Street.

Weekday daytime hours bring the only real activity. Evenings stay quiet except for the pub's own trade. We plan each visit around whichever applies.

Why People Call Us

What Talbot Court tenants and residents rely on us for

  • We check the lock, not the legend. A building's age or old sign tells us nothing about what it needs today.
  • Gentle methods come before force. A drill only appears once every softer option has genuinely failed.
  • Comfortable with tight access. Narrow courts and awkward approaches are routine for us.
  • Flats get equal care. A residential job matters as much as any commercial one here.
  • We state our limits plainly. Spare keys and access-card setup go to other specialists.
  • No hour puts us off. Busy office day or a quiet pub-only evening, we still answer.
