Why EC2A Is Different

A playhouse pulled apart to build a more famous one

EC2A covers Shoreditch and the streets reaching towards the City's Finsbury Square edge. This ground holds one of English theatre's genuine origin stories. In 1576, actor-manager James Burbage built the Theatre here, on land that had once belonged to the dissolved Holywell Priory. The City of London banned theatrical performances within its own walls. So Burbage built just outside them, in a district already known for brothels and gaming houses rather than respectability. It became England's first successful, purpose-built playhouse, and a young Shakespeare worked here not long after arriving in London, writing several of his earliest plays before the Globe existed at all.

The arrangement didn't last. A dispute with the landlord came to a head in 1598. Rather than lose the building outright, Burbage's sons Richard and Cuthbert had it dismantled, reportedly under cover of winter darkness. The timbers were carried across the Thames to Bankside and used to build the Globe, which opened the following year. The Theatre's own site then disappeared from view entirely. It took until 2008 for Museum of London archaeologists to rediscover its foundations. Further digging in 2018 uncovered a gravel yard where theatregoers once ate and drank, along with a complete Elizabethan goblet and fragments of the money boxes used to collect entry fees.

A Neighbour That Lasted Longer

Barely two hundred yards away, a second playhouse called the Curtain opened in 1577. That made this small stretch of Shoreditch London's first proper entertainment district. When the Theatre's lease trouble forced Shakespeare's company out, they used the Curtain as a temporary home between roughly 1597 and 1599. Tradition holds that Henry V's famous prologue, with its reference to "this wooden O," describes the Curtain itself, since the play is thought to have premiered there before the Globe was built. More recent excavations have complicated that tidy story. They suggest the Curtain may actually have been rectangular rather than round, which has left historians less certain the line was written with this particular building in mind.

Whatever its exact shape, the Curtain outlived its neighbour by decades. It kept going into the 1620s, long after the Theatre's own timbers had gone into the Globe. Both buildings are gone now, found again only through careful digging. We deal with what's actually in front of us rather than old stories. Still, it's no bad thing to work somewhere with this much history underfoot.

What EC2A Residents & Businesses Call About

The work this corner of Shoreditch brings in

Converted Warehouse Studios

Many buildings here began life as something else entirely before becoming creative workspace. Commercial security has to work with that layered history, not against it.

Start-Up Offices

Smaller companies here often move in and out of units faster than a typical lease cycle. A quick lock replacement between tenants keeps turnover simple.

Evening Trade Near Old Street

This postcode gets genuinely busy after dark, with bars and venues drawing steady footfall. A reliable repair matters more where closing time can't wait on a faulty lock.

Broken Or Snapped Keys

Older locks on converted buildings can grip a snapped key stubbornly. Our broken keys page sets out how we free one carefully.

Late-Night Lockouts

This part of the City keeps later hours than most, and a locked door doesn't wait for a convenient moment. We still turn out, whatever the hour.

Two jobs always go elsewhere: making duplicate keys, and setting up a building's card or intercom access. Ask the managing agent's own suppliers about those instead.

Locked Out In EC2A

A postcode that comes alive once the offices empty

Daytime here moves at a fairly ordinary office pace. Footfall stays steady but unremarkable through most of the working day.

Evening flips that pattern entirely. Bars and venues draw crowds well past the hours most of the City goes quiet.

The hour makes no difference to how we work. Gentleness comes first, every time, and the drill waits until genuinely nothing else is left to try.

Snapped and missing keys don't get the same treatment from us. Read broken keys or lost keys for whichever situation applies to you.

Dismantled Versus Forgotten

Two ways a building can disappear

The Theatre vanished on purpose, pulled apart deliberately for parts. The Curtain simply fell out of use and was built over, its presence fading from memory until archaeologists went looking for it.

A full report on the Theatre's 2018 excavation covers that rediscovery in detail. The Curtain's own uncovering in 2011 is set out in this account of the dig.

Buildings here have a habit of outliving their original purpose entirely. We check what's actually fitted rather than assuming from a structure's age or past life.

Access & Traffic

Getting to you around Shoreditch

This postcode carries heavy footfall through the working day, picking up again sharply once evening trade begins. Loading restrictions apply throughout.

Both Old Street and Liverpool Street stations lie within walking distance, often the quicker option when surface roads back up.

This postcode's busiest hours land on weekday evenings and weekends, almost the reverse of a typical office district. Our planning accounts for that reversal.

Why People Call Us

What EC2A tenants and residents rely on us for

  • We judge by what's there, not what it was. A building's past use tells us little about what's actually fitted now.
  • We don't reach for force first. Gentler options always get tried ahead of a drill.
  • Comfortable with late hours. This postcode's evening rhythm is routine for us, not an inconvenience.
  • We don't shortchange residential work. A flat gets just as much care as any commercial job.
  • Honest about scope. Spare keys and access-system programming aren't jobs we take on.
  • Reachable at any hour. Quiet weekday morning or a packed Friday night, it's the same to us.

Common Questions

A Theatre Smuggled Across The River

Did England's first purpose-built playhouse really stand here?

Yes, built in 1576 by James Burbage, outside the City's own jurisdiction, which banned theatres at the time.

Is the story about its timbers becoming the Globe genuinely true?

Yes. After a landlord dispute, Burbage's sons dismantled the building and carried its timbers across the Thames in 1598.

Was the original site ever found again?

Yes, Museum of London archaeologists uncovered its foundations in 2008, with further excavation following in 2018.

The Neighbour That Outlasted It

Did a second theatre really open just next door?

Yes, the Curtain opened in 1577, barely 200 yards from the Theatre, making this London's first entertainment district.

Is it true Henry V's famous prologue describes this exact building?

That's the traditional view, though recent excavations suggesting a rectangular rather than round shape have made historians less certain.

Did the Curtain survive longer than its neighbour?

Yes, considerably longer. It kept operating as a theatre into the 1620s, decades after the original Theatre was dismantled.

Booking Around Shoreditch

Which streets does EC2A actually cover?

Shoreditch and the streets running towards the Finsbury Square edge of the City.

Do you work on converted warehouses as well as newer offices?

We do. This postcode has a genuine mix, and each building gets assessed on its own terms.

Can you reach a lockout during a busy evening here?

Yes, though finishing on foot often works out faster once these streets fill up after dark.

Is weekend cover realistic in a nightlife-heavy postcode?

It is, every single day, independent of how busy the streets get.

Do you handle flats as well as studios and start-ups here?

Absolutely, and residential and commercial work genuinely overlap across this postcode.

What if my building has its own entry arrangements?

Run them past us beforehand so we can plan the visit properly.

A theatre vanished overnight once. We'd rather your lock just worked quietly for years.
