Why Pepys Street Is Different
A street younger than its own namesake's famous diary
Despite carrying his name, Pepys Street itself is a considerably newer invention than the diarist it honours. The street only took its current form in 1923, when an older road called Colchester Street was extended through to Seething Lane and renamed after Samuel Pepys. That renaming happened specifically alongside construction of a major new building nearby, the headquarters of the Port of London Authority, which had opened the previous year.
That PLA building, designed by Sir Edwin Cooper, made a genuinely remarkable architectural claim. Its domed rotunda, spanning a hundred feet across and standing sixty-seven feet high, was said to be the largest hall in existence without any supporting girders at all. At the Authority's own peak, more than 1,200 people visited that hall each day, paying port dues for boats arriving along the Thames.
A Dome Lost, Then A Building Reborn
The Port of London Authority itself had been created in 1908, established under Prime Minister David Lloyd George to take full control of the river and its docks. The grand building didn't survive the 20th century unscathed. During the Blitz, it suffered serious bomb damage, with its celebrated domed rotunda destroyed outright. The Authority eventually moved its own operations to Tilbury, and the building itself found an entirely new purpose decades later, purchased in 2010 and transformed through a six-year renovation into what's now the Four Seasons Hotel at Ten Trinity Square. We're concerned with something considerably more grounded. A lock on Pepys Street gets fixed properly, whatever grand dome or wartime damage happens to be attached to the building nearby.

Locked Out On Pepys Street
Busy by day, genuinely still by night
Footfall toward the Tower stays fairly constant through most of the working day.
That constant movement tapers off sharply as evening arrives, leaving a quieter stretch behind.
Whatever time it happens, our process holds. Softer techniques come first, drills only when truly necessary.
Not every key failure looks the same. A snapped key needs a different fix from a missing one entirely.

What A Grand Hall Leaves Behind, Even Without Its Dome
A supportless ceiling, a wartime loss, and a hotel reborn
Few streets sit this close to a building that once claimed an architectural record, lost its own crowning feature to enemy bombing, and still found its way back to genuine prominence decades later.
The Port of London Authority building's own grand architecture is detailed by this period account of Trinity Square. Its later transformation into Ten Trinity Square is covered further by this record of the building's own history.
Our own priorities run considerably plainer than any of that. A lock's actual performance is all we're judging.

- Heavy footfall is simply routine. A landmark's own crowds don't throw off how we work.
- A flat earns the same care as an office. Homes and businesses get equal attention from us.
- We're clear about our own scope. Spare keys and card systems sit with someone else.
