Why London Wall Is Different

Destruction that uncovered something centuries old

London Wall runs between the Barbican and the heart of the City, tracing the old line of the Roman and medieval defences it's named for. For much of their later history, long stretches of that ancient wall weren't visible at all. Generations of property owners built directly against it, often using the Roman stonework itself as a convenient, ready-made foundation. By the early twentieth century, most of the wall had effectively disappeared into the buildings around it.

Wartime bombing changed that, if entirely by accident. An official report on post-war reconstruction in the City noted plainly that enemy action had exposed a stretch of the wall to a degree it hadn't been seen in centuries. The later buildings that had hidden it for so long were gone. What remained standing, in several places, was the ancient structure underneath.

Two Kinds Of Ruin, Side By Side

Nowhere shows that more directly than Noble Street, where an 80-metre stretch of Roman and medieval walling survives, including two original turrets from the old Cripplegate fort and the base of a bastion. Projecting from the inner face of that same ancient stonework are the party walls of ordinary houses, bombed and later demolished, that once fronted the street. Two thousand years of history and one night of 1940s destruction sit directly against each other, with nothing hidden between them.

St Alphage, a short walk away, tells a similar story. Part of the church had already been pulled down in 1923, and what remained was further gutted during the Blitz. That same bombing uncovered Roman wall remains behind the church that had been hidden by later buildings for generations. Even the road itself is younger than it sounds. London Wall as a modern street wasn't laid out until the 1950s, built as part of the City's post-war reconstruction, carrying an ancient name on ground the war had only just finished clearing.

So this stretch of the City owes what little of its oldest fabric survives, oddly enough, to the same destruction that levelled everything built on top of it. We deal in something far less dramatic: making sure the doors on whatever's standing here now do their job properly.

What London Wall Businesses & Residents Call About

The calls this road generates

Office Blocks Along The Road

Post-war and more recent buildings dominate much of this stretch, each seeing steady use through the working day. Whatever we fit needs to cope with that kind of volume.

Buildings Near The Wall Fragments

Close to the surviving wall sections, a handful of older structures remain standing. We repair with that context in mind rather than treating every job the same way.

Shops & Cafés Serving Office Workers

Whether daytime trade holds up here depends almost entirely on the offices around it staying busy. Swapping a jammed lock fast protects that custom.

Same-day priority

Flats Among The Offices

A few residential entrances sit woven among the commercial stock on this stretch. Each one is treated individually, never folded in with the offices around it.

Broken Or Snapped Keys

Older locks near the wall fragments can be stubborn about releasing a broken key. See our dedicated page for the careful method we use.

Evening Lockouts

This stretch empties out quickly once the office crowd heads home. Our response stays the same regardless of what time that happens.

Call now

A point worth making: we leave duplicate keys and card or intercom setup to other specialists entirely. The managing agent's own contacts handle both.

Locked Out On London Wall

Busy by day, genuinely quiet by night

Office staff and visitors move steadily between buildings here throughout working hours.

That changes fast once the day ends. The same stretch empties out, and far fewer people remain nearby if something goes wrong.

Whichever applies, our method doesn't shift. Gentle techniques get a complete run before a drill is ever an option.

A snapped key and a vanished one aren't the same problem, and don't get the same fix. Broken keys and lost keys are each explained on their own page.

What Survives, And Why

An accident of destruction, not an act of preservation

Nobody set out to save this wall. It survived mostly because something else was destroyed first, and nothing has been rebuilt on top of it since.

Historic England's own listing covers the Noble Street remains in full technical detail. The fuller story of St Alphage's own ruins is set out by this account of the site.

We'd rather not leave anything to chance the way this wall's survival was left to chance. A lock gets inspected and fixed on its own merits, not by luck.

If your own lock has you puzzled, explain what it's doing and we'll tell you plainly what we make of it.

Common Questions

What The Bombs Uncovered

Did wartime bombing really expose parts of the ancient wall?

Yes. An official post-war report noted the wall was visible to an extent not seen for centuries.

How had the wall been hidden before that?

Later buildings had been constructed directly against it, often using the Roman stonework as their own foundation.

Is any of that destruction still visible alongside the ancient wall today?

Yes, at Noble Street, where bombed house party-walls still project from the same stretch of Roman stone.

A Modern Road With An Ancient Name

Is the street called London Wall actually old itself?

No, not as a road. It was only laid out in the 1950s, during post-war reconstruction.

Did bombing affect the old church along this street too?

Yes, St Alphage had already lost part of its structure in 1923, then was further gutted during the Blitz.

Did that same bombing reveal anything near the church?

Yes, Roman wall remains behind it, previously hidden by more recent buildings.

Booking Along London Wall

Which stretch does this page actually cover?

The road itself, running between the Barbican and the heart of the City.

Do you work on both modern office blocks and the older buildings nearby?

Both, genuinely, and each building gets looked at on its own rather than by type.

Can you reach a lockout during a busy weekday?

Yes, and the final stretch on foot sometimes beats sitting in traffic once things get busy.

Is weekend cover realistic on a mostly commercial road like this?

Absolutely, seven days a week, whatever the offices nearby are doing.

Do you handle flats as well as office premises here?

Residential callouts happen too, though office premises make up most of our work here.

What if my building has its own security procedures?

Walk us through them in advance and we'll build the visit around that.

What survives here did so by accident. We'd rather your lock's reliability wasn't left to chance.
