Why The City Of London Is Different
A government older than the one that technically oversees it
So, most of London answers to the Greater London Authority. The City of London doesn't, at least not in the way everywhere else does. Its own governing body is the City of London Corporation. Its authority traces back further than the British Parliament itself. That makes it one of the oldest forms of local government still running anywhere in the country. Even so, that independence runs deeper than most visitors realise. The City has its own police force. It's entirely separate from the Metropolitan Police covering the rest of the capital, with a remit focused heavily on fraud and economic crime.
Perhaps the strangest detail of that independence is a role called the Remembrancer. This senior official sits inside the House of Commons itself. They're not an elected member, though. Instead, they're a permanent voice for the City's own interests. Within the Square Mile, the Lord Mayor is formally described as subordinate only to the Sovereign. That's a striking phrase. Everywhere else in Britain, a role like this would answer to considerably more layers of authority above it.
Empty At Dawn, Crowded By Nine
The numbers here genuinely swing hard across a single day. Barely eight thousand people actually live within the City's square mile of ground. Add in daily commuters and visitors, though, and the figure climbs fast. It reaches into the hundreds of thousands, before dropping back down again each evening. Few places in Britain see their population shift quite so dramatically on a daily cycle. Residential streets by night become a dense financial engine by day. We're considerably less concerned with constitutional history. A lock anywhere across the City gets fixed properly. It doesn't matter what ancient privilege or title applies to the street it sits on.

What City Of London Businesses & Residents Call About
What this area brings us
Financial & Professional Offices
The City holds one of the densest concentrations of commercial tenants anywhere in Britain. We scale security to match that density, treating no two tenants identically.
Book aheadPeriod Buildings Across The Square Mile
Centuries-old architecture survives beside entirely modern towers throughout the City. Each repair reflects that mix, not a one-size approach.
Book aheadShops Serving A Huge Daily Population
Trade across the City depends heavily on the huge numbers passing through daily. A prompt lock replacement matters where downtime means lost custom fast.
Same-day priorityFlats Among The Commercial Core
Genuine residential pockets persist throughout the City, despite how few residents it has. Each gets assessed on its own merits, never folded into the commercial units nearby.
Book aheadBroken Or Snapped Keys
Older locks across the City can be stubborn about releasing a broken key. Our guide covers exactly how we approach that safely.
Call nowEvening Lockouts
The City empties out fast once the working day winds down. That timing makes no difference to us, whatever hour it strikes.
Call nowA brief point on scope: we don't duplicate keys here, nor do we programme card or intercom access systems. Those stay with the building's own managing agent.
Locked Out Across The City Of London
A working-day crush, then a genuinely different City
Daytime brings dense office and commuter traffic across the Square Mile, reflecting its role as a financial centre.
Once that trade packs up for the evening, large stretches of the City empty noticeably, far quieter than its daytime bustle would suggest.
Neither pattern changes how we work. Every gentle technique gets a genuine try before a drill is ever considered necessary.
What's wrong with your key shapes the fix entirely. Read this for a snapped one, this if it's vanished instead.

What We Do
Services across the City of London
What Makes This Square Mile Genuinely Unlike Anywhere Else
Independence that's survived into the present day, largely intact
Few places this small can claim their own police force. Fewer still have a permanent voice in Parliament. Fewer still have a government older than the body meant to watch over it. Somehow, the City holds all three.
The Corporation's own role is explained by the City's own account of its structure. The Remembrancer's role is traced by this guide.
We keep our own focus considerably narrower than any of that. A lock earns our attention by working properly. It doesn't matter what old privilege or title applies to the building around it.
If your own lock seems off, tell us what it's doing and we'll give you a straight, honest read on it.

Access & Traffic
Getting to you across the City of London
The City carries heavy commuter and commercial traffic throughout the working week, with loading restrictions enforced on most streets.
Multiple Underground and mainline stations sit within the Square Mile itself, frequently the faster route in when surface roads are congested.
Weekday mornings and evenings bring the sharpest surges, with weekends considerably calmer across most of the City. We plan each visit around whichever pattern applies.
Why People Call Us
What City of London tenants and residents rely on us for
- Current condition decides everything. Even so, what a building used to be makes no difference to us.
- We avoid damage wherever possible. A drill appears only when genuinely nothing else will do.
- No street fazes us. Dense commercial stretches and quiet residential pockets get the same standard.
- Flats aren't treated as lesser work. A residential callout gets the same care as any commercial one.
- Our boundaries are clearly drawn. Duplicate keys and access-system wiring go elsewhere.
- Hour of day doesn't limit us. Busy working day or a silent City night, both get the same answer.
