Why This Area Is Different

A debtors' prison that briefly became London's busiest wedding chapel

For a few remarkable decades in the 18th century, the area around the Fleet Prison hosted something genuinely unexpected: weddings, on an enormous scale. The prison had long claimed exemption from ordinary church jurisdiction. Clergy inside and around it began performing marriages quickly, cheaply, and without the usual formalities. So, by the 1740s, the practice had exploded. More than half of all weddings in London happened here. As many as six thousand marriages took place in a single year.

Even so, the prison's own wardens took a direct cut of the profits. When a 1711 statute tried imposing fines on them for it, the trade simply relocated outside the prison walls into the surrounding Liberty of the Fleet, a genuinely lawless pocket of the City operating under its own unofficial rules. Most of these marriages were perfectly genuine. Couples simply chose speed and low cost over a conventional church wedding. Even so, the arrangement eventually drew enough concern to be suppressed entirely.

A Prison Old Enough To Remember Rebellion

The Fleet Prison itself predates most of what still stands nearby. Its origins trace back to the Norman period. Even so, its reputation for grim conditions ran deep. The Earl of Surrey once described it as a noisome prison. Its pestilent airs, he wrote, were likely to damage anyone's health. During the Peasants' Revolt of 1381, Wat Tyler's rebels stormed the prison directly. They ransacked its stores and burned buildings throughout the surrounding Liberty. Centuries later, Charles Dickens gave the prison a different kind of permanence. He wrote it directly into his own fiction, before it was finally demolished in 1846. We're concerned with something considerably calmer. A lock in this area gets fixed properly. It doesn't matter what prison or practice once occupied the ground nearby.

The older locks here don't always give up a broken key easily. This page explains the careful method we use.

Evening Lockouts

This area empties out fast once the working day winds down. That timing makes no difference to us, whatever hour it strikes.

A quick clarification: duplicate keys and card or intercom setup both fall to other specialists, not us. The managing agent's own suppliers handle those instead.

A working day's pace, then a genuinely quiet night

Daytime brings steady office traffic here, tied closely to the commercial activity this stretch now supports.

Once that trade packs up for the evening, the area empties noticeably, far quieter than its daytime bustle would suggest.

Neither pattern changes how we work. Every gentle technique gets a genuine try before a drill is ever considered necessary.

What's gone wrong with your key decides how we approach it. See broken keys for one situation, lost keys for the other.

What A Prison Left Behind Besides Its Own Ruins

Thousands of marriages, one grim reputation, and barely a trace today

Few institutions managed quite this strange a double life. A place known for genuine misery also briefly became where enormous numbers of Londoners chose, quite happily, to get married.

The full scale of Fleet marriages and how the practice eventually ended is set out by this detailed record of the custom. The prison's own grim history is covered by this account of the Fleet Prison itself.

Our own standards stay considerably plainer than that history. Whether a lock works is the only thing that actually concerns us.

Something not right with your lock? Describe the symptoms and we'll tell you plainly what's going on.

Why People Call Us

What River Fleet's tenants and residents rely on us for

  • Current condition decides everything. What a site used to hold makes no real difference to us.
  • We avoid damage wherever possible. A drill appears only when genuinely nothing else will do.
  • Dense commercial streets? No issue. Steady office traffic here is simply routine for us.
  • Flats aren't treated as lesser work. A residential callout gets the same care as any commercial one.
  • Our boundaries are clearly drawn. Duplicate keys and access-system wiring go elsewhere.
  • Hour of day doesn't limit us. Busy working day or a silent night, both get the same answer.
