Why This Site Carries Two Histories
Held against their will, then welcomed to safety
Liverpool Street station stands on ground with an unusually heavy history. From 1247, a priory here took in the sick and later the mentally ill, becoming Bethlem Hospital. Conditions were harsh by any standard, and the hospital's own name passed into English as "Bedlam," a word still used for chaos today. In 1676 the hospital moved to a grander site at Moorfields, and this ground passed to other uses.
The railway arrived two centuries later. A smaller station called Bishopsgate opened nearby in 1840. It couldn't keep pace with demand, and the Great Eastern Railway replaced it with a larger terminus on this site, opening as Liverpool Street in 1874 and 1875.
A Different Kind Of Arrival
In the winter of 1938, after the violence of Kristallnacht in Germany, Britain agreed to accept Jewish children from Nazi-controlled Europe without their parents. Over the following nine months, close to ten thousand children arrived by train, many of them through this station. Most never saw their parents again.
Since 2006, a bronze memorial called Kindertransport – The Arrival has stood in the station's forecourt, in a small plaza named Hope Square. It shows five children with their luggage, newly stepped off a train. The sculptor, Frank Meisler, had made that same journey himself as a child. Around the figures, bronze blocks carry the names of the cities the children left: Berlin, Vienna, Prague, and others.
So this ground has held two very different meanings: a place people were confined against their will, and a place that later marked thousands of children reaching safety. A locked door can do either of those things, in its own small way. We only ever work to do the second.

Locked Out Near Liverpool Street
Crowds by day, quiet by night
By day, this is one of the busiest corners of the City. A locked door in front of that crowd needs a calm, efficient response.
By night, the same streets can empty surprisingly fast, and whoever is locked out then wants a straightforward answer, not a wait.
Whichever it is, the softer route comes first. Drilling only follows once nothing gentler has worked.
Snapped clean, or actually missing? Broken keys and lost keys are two different jobs, and our pages explain why.

What A Door Is For
Two purposes, one piece of hardware
A lock can serve two very different ends: keeping someone in, or keeping a space safe for the people who belong there. This ground has known both, in different centuries, for reasons far bigger than any single door.
The Museum of the Mind, based at the modern Bethlem hospital, keeps a fuller history of the institution than fits here. The Association of Jewish Refugees maintains a detailed account of the Kindertransport itself.
What we do is smaller and far more ordinary: making sure the doors people rely on each day actually work as they should.
Not sure what your own door needs? Describe how it's behaving, and we'll tell you honestly.

Access & Traffic
Reaching you near one of the City's busiest stations
Liverpool Street is among the busiest interchanges in London, and the streets around it carry heavy foot and bus traffic through most of the day. We time visits around the worst of the rush where we can.
Bishopsgate and the roads feeding it have their own restrictions, so we check current rules before routing a vehicle through them.
Being this close to so many rail and Underground lines, an engineer travelling by train can sometimes reach you faster than one driving.

Common Questions
The Site's Earlier History
Was there really a hospital on this exact site?
Yes. Bethlem Priory, later Bethlem Royal Hospital, stood here from 1247 until it moved to Moorfields in 1676.
Is that where the word 'Bedlam' comes from?
Yes. The hospital's name passed into everyday English as a word for chaos and confusion.
Does anything of the original building survive?
No. The site was redeveloped long before the station was built, and nothing of the priory remains above ground.
The Kindertransport Memorial
What does the Kindertransport memorial actually show?
Bronze figures of five children with their luggage, newly arrived, standing beside a short length of railway track.
Who made it, and why does that matter?
The sculptor, Frank Meisler, had himself travelled to Britain on a Kindertransport train as a child.
Where can I find it at the station?
In Hope Square, on the forecourt outside the main entrance.
