Why Monument Square Is Different
A plaza built on a church nobody got around to rebuilding
So, before anyone called it Monument Square, this plaza went by a plainer name: Monument Yard. That older name stuck for centuries, describing the modest open space beside the column, until 1911, when a wider reorganisation of local street names folded it entirely into Monument Street. The square itself occupies ground with its own, older story. A parish church, St Margaret, New Fish Street, stood here before the Great Fire of 1666 reduced it to ruins. Unlike many City churches destroyed that year, it was never rebuilt. Its parish was simply merged into the neighbouring St Magnus the Martyr instead, leaving this square as the clearest surviving trace of a church that otherwise vanished from the map entirely.
Even so, the column that now dominates the square hasn't always escaped criticism either. The poet Alexander Pope, writing some decades after construction finished, aimed a pointed couplet at its inscription, comparing the column to a boastful bully that lifts its head and lies. It's a sharper verdict than most tourist plaques offer, and a reminder that even a structure built to commemorate tragedy can still attract a decent literary dig.
A Square Reshaped For Modern Footfall
Even so, Monument Square's own character changed again more recently. In 2006, the City carried out a dedicated improvement scheme, pedestrianising the area at a cost of roughly seven hundred and ninety thousand pounds, prioritising the crowds who gather here over passing traffic. We're considerably less concerned with grand schemes ourselves. A lock on Monument Square gets fixed properly, whatever century or budget shaped the pavement outside.

What this square brings us
Offices Facing The Square
Even so, buildings directly overlooking this plaza see steady footfall most office blocks never experience. We match security to that intensity, never treated as routine.

Several older buildings sit close to the square itself, each carrying real character. We respect that rather than treating every door identically.

Even so, tourist footfall heading to the column keeps trade steady along this stretch. Swapping a jammed lock quickly protects that custom.
Same-day priorityFlats Near The Commercial Core
Even so, a small number of residential entrances sit among the offices in this area. Each one gets its own assessment, not grouped in with the commercial units.

A snapped key doesn't always come free easily from the older locks here. This page sets out the careful process we follow.
Call nowEvening Lockouts
Once office workers and daytime visitors both clear out, this square empties quickly. Our response holds steady regardless.
Call nowA point worth making clearly: duplicate keys and card or intercom setup both fall to other specialists, not us. The managing agent's own contacts handle those.
Locked Out On Monument Square
Office hours and visitor footfall, then a quiet evening
A genuine mix of office traffic and column-bound visitors defines this square through the day.
Both patterns fade fast by evening, leaving noticeably quiet streets behind.
Neither pattern changes our method. Soft techniques always get a full run before a drill is ever brought out.
Fixing a snapped key looks nothing like fixing a lost one. For specifics on either, see broken keys or lost keys, whichever fits.

What A Name Change Can Still Reveal
A yard, a lost church, and a poet's unkind verdict
Even so, most squares keep whatever name they're given. This one didn't. It quietly dropped its older identity as a yard for something grander, once the street layout changed around it.
The square's naming history and its connection to the lost church are covered by this detailed record of the area. Pope's own verdict on the column is discussed further by this account of the Monument's history.
We take a plainer approach than any poet would. A lock either does its job properly or it doesn't. It doesn't matter what an old couplet says about honesty.

Why People Call Us
What Monument Square's tenants and residents rely on us for
- We check what's fitted, not the backstory. Even so, a building's history doesn't change what's needed on the door today.
- Patient before forceful. A drill only comes out once nothing gentler has worked.
- Comfortable near a major landmark. Even so, tourist crowds and extra footfall don't slow us down.
- Homes matter here too. A residential job gets exactly what a commercial one does.
- Clear about our limits. Spare keys and access-system setup go to someone else.
- Reachable at any hour. Busy tourist day or a quiet evening, it's the same to us.
