Why EC3N Is Different
A poet above one gate, a convent beside the wall nearby
EC3N runs along Aldgate and Minories, the old eastern line of the City wall. In May 1374, the City granted Geoffrey Chaucer a lease for life on the dwelling-house built directly above Aldgate itself, rent-free. A month later he was appointed Comptroller of Customs at the nearby port, a short walk from his own front door. He lived in those rooms for the next twelve years, working by day and, by most accounts, writing by candlelight in the evenings. Earlier works like Anelida and Arcite and The House of Fame date from this period. The Canterbury Tales followed close behind, begun not long after his tenancy at Aldgate came to its own abrupt end in 1386, when the rooms were handed to someone else the very next day.
The gate itself eventually came down in 1761, long after its most famous tenant had gone. But for twelve years, one of the most important figures in English literature climbed the same stairs each evening that porters and guards had climbed for generations before him.
A Convent That Answered Only To Rome
Just outside the same gate stood a very different kind of institution. The Abbey of the Minoresses of St Clare was founded in 1293 by Edmund Crouchback, Earl of Lancaster and brother to Edward I, along with his wife Blanche of Navarre, who brought the first nuns over from France. They followed a genuinely austere rule: no meat, no beds, long stretches of silence, and bare feet. Unusually, the abbey answered directly to the Pope rather than the Bishop of London, a privilege that marked it out from almost every other religious house in the City.
The community survived plague, a devastating fire in 1515, and more than two centuries of ordinary City life before the Dissolution finally caught up with it in 1539. Its buildings became an armoury, then a workhouse, and what remained burned down for good in 1797. All that's left today is the name: Minories, still on the map, still marking exactly where the nuns once stood.
A poet's rooms and a convent's chapel, gone now, both still shape how this stretch of the City is known. We work on something smaller but just as practical: keeping the doors here secure, whatever era the building behind them happens to belong to.

Locked Out In EC3N
A gateway's traffic, by day and by night
Aldgate has carried traffic in and out of the City for longer than almost anywhere else, and that habit hasn't changed. Daytime footfall here stays heavy.
After dark, the picture shifts. Office staff head home and the junction empties out, leaving a noticeably quieter stretch behind.
Neither scenario changes how we work. Gentle methods always come first, with a drill kept strictly as a last resort.
A snapped key isn't the same job as one that's gone astray entirely. We've covered each separately: broken keys on one page, lost keys on the other.

What A Name Leaves Behind
A poet's rooms and a convent's chapel, both long gone
Neither Chaucer's rooms nor the Minoresses' abbey survive today. What remains is a street name on one side and a literary legacy on the other, each outlasting the actual building by centuries.
The National Archives sets out Chaucer's own customs records and Aldgate tenancy in detail. Wikipedia covers the Abbey of the Minoresses from its founding through to dissolution.
A building's history doesn't tell us much about its current locks, though. We check what's actually fitted rather than assuming from the area's reputation.

Access & Traffic
Getting to you around the old eastern gate
Aldgate remains a genuinely busy junction, with several major routes converging where the old gate once stood. Loading restrictions apply throughout the area.
Both Aldgate and Aldgate East stations sit within easy reach, so getting in on foot is often quicker when surface traffic clogs up.
The heaviest traffic comes during weekday office hours, easing considerably by evening and over weekends. We route according to whichever pattern applies.
Why People Call Us
What EC3N tenants and residents rely on us for
- We check rather than assume. A building's history doesn't dictate what hardware is actually fitted.
- Force comes last, not first. We try every gentler option before it.
- Comfortable near a busy gateway. Junction traffic and crowds don't slow us down.
- Homes get full attention too. A residential job gets exactly what a commercial one does.
- Scope stated plainly. Spare keys and access-system programming fall to others.
- Always on the other end of the phone. Peak-hour junction or quiet night street, the answer's the same.

A Poet's Rooms Above The Wall
Did Chaucer genuinely live inside the gate structure itself?
Yes, in a dwelling-house built above Aldgate, leased to him for life by the City in May 1374.
Was this connected to his day job?
Directly. A month later he was appointed Comptroller of Customs at the nearby port, a short walk from his door.
How long did the arrangement last?
Twelve years, until 1386, when his tenancy ended abruptly and the rooms were handed to someone else the very next day.
The Nuns Who Named A District
Did a genuine convent once stand where the Minories is now?
Yes, the Abbey of the Minoresses of St Clare, founded in 1293 just outside Aldgate.
Why were the nuns called Minoresses?
They belonged to the Order of St Clare, and a female Friar Minor was known in English as a minoress.
What happened to the abbey after the Dissolution?
It was surrendered to Henry VIII in 1539, later used as an armoury, and what remained burned down in 1797.

Which streets does EC3N actually cover?
