A Trial That Sealed Its Own Building's Fate

Locksmith EC4V: The Court That Doomed Blackfriars, The Company That Rebuilt It

Henry VIII's divorce trial was heard here in 1529, and the fallout helped bring down the friary itself within a decade. Shakespeare's own company later built a theatre in its remains. Call 020 8534 4949 for a locksmith who knows this stretch of the river.

Why EC4V Is Different

One trial, one dissolved friary, one theatre built from the wreckage

Blackfriars takes its name from the Dominican friars, distinguished by their black robes, who settled here in 1276 under the patronage of Edward I. The monastery grew into one of medieval London's most prestigious religious houses, prestigious enough to host parliaments and, in 1522, the lodging of the Holy Roman Emperor himself.

Its most consequential moment came later. On 31 May 1529, a specially convened legatine court opened here to decide whether Henry VIII's marriage to Catherine of Aragon was valid. Cardinal Wolsey presided alongside the papal legate Cardinal Campeggio. On 21 June, Catherine appeared in person and made a direct, famously moving appeal to her husband, kneeling before him in front of the court. It made no difference to the outcome that mattered to Henry. The court adjourned that summer without ever reaching a verdict, and it never reconvened. The failure cost Wolsey his position, and set England on the road to breaking with Rome altogether.

A Theatre Rose Where The Friary Fell

That break had consequences for the very building the trial was held in. Within a decade, Henry's dissolution of the monasteries swept away the friary along with the rest. Its refectory, once used for the monks' communal meals, sat within a wealthy residential quarter that had grown up around the old precinct. In 1596, the theatre builder James Burbage bought that refectory outright, intending to install his own company there. His aristocratic new neighbours objected fiercely, and even his own company's patron signed a petition against it. Burbage had to settle for leasing the space to a troupe of child actors instead.

It took until 1608 for Burbage's company, by then known as the King's Men, to finally take possession themselves, this time without objection. Shakespeare was one of seven shareholders in the reorganised playhouse, and the company used it as their winter theatre from 1609 onward, reportedly earning considerably more from it than from the open-air Globe. A dining hall built for Dominican friars ended up staging some of the most enduring plays in the English language.

So this small stretch of riverside has hosted a trial that helped end monastic London, and a theatre built quite literally from what monastic London left behind. We work on considerably smaller stakes, just making sure the doors here still do their job properly.

What tends to come up along this stretch of river

Offices Near Blackfriars Station

Multiple tenants share dense office floors around the station. Commercial security here needs to work for the whole building, not just one door.

Older Riverside Buildings

Several buildings here carry hardware that's outlasted more than one generation of tenants. A patient lock repair respects the scale of what's there.

Shops & Cafés Near The Bridge

Foot traffic crossing the bridge rarely eases off during the day. When a lock jams, swapping it out fast matters more here than most places.

Flats Among The Offices

A small number of homes sit wedged between the commercial buildings here, and each one gets looked at individually rather than lumped together.

Broken Or Snapped Keys

Riverside barrels have a habit of gripping a snapped key rather than letting go. Read our broken keys guidance for how we handle it without forcing anything.

Evening Lockouts Along The Riverside

The crowds vanish fast once the commute finishes for the day. Whatever time that leaves you outside, we still turn up.

One thing worth knowing: we fit and fix physical locks, full stop. Key duplication and a building's own card or intercom setup go to specialists who handle those specifically.

Locked Out In EC4V

A crossing point that fills and empties fast

Rush hour turns Blackfriars into a genuine crossing point, with people moving constantly between the station, the bridge and the surrounding offices. A locked door in the middle of that has an audience whether it wants one or not.

Come evening the picture flips. The crowds thin out fast, and being locked out then can feel a lot more isolating.

Our approach doesn't change with the hour: work through the gentle options fully before a drill even enters the conversation.

A key snapped clean and a key that's simply vanished aren't the same job. Broken keys and lost keys each get their own approach, set out on their respective pages.

What Outlasts A Building

A trial, a friary, and what came after both

Neither the court nor the friary that hosted it survived intact. What did survive, in a fashion, was the space itself, repurposed again and again long after its original occupants had gone.

The trial's own story is told well by the Tudor Society's account of the legatine court. The Folger Shakespeare Library holds the original deed for Burbage's 1596 purchase of the theatre space itself.

Buildings change hands and change purpose here more often than most. We try not to assume what era a door actually belongs to just because of what's around it.

If you can't place your own building's hardware in any particular era, describe it to us and we'll help make sense of it.

The Process

Booking a locksmith EC4V callout

  • Ring or messageGive us the address, the unit, and what's actually happening.
  • We confirm accessManaged buildings sometimes need sign-off first, so we check.
  • A real look firstPricing waits until the engineer has actually examined the door.
  • Verified on siteWe check the lock and door ourselves before we call it finished.

Access & Traffic

Getting to you around the bridge and station

Blackfriars Bridge funnels heavy traffic across the river at most hours, and the roads immediately around the station stay busy well into the evening. Loading restrictions apply throughout.

Blackfriars station itself sits right on the river, serving both Underground and mainline services, so an engineer arriving by train can often beat one stuck in bridge traffic.

Weekday mornings and evenings bring the sharpest surges in footfall. We plan around those where we reasonably can.

Why People Call Us

What EC4V tenants and residents rely on us for

  • We don't assume a building's age from its surroundings. Every door gets looked at on its own terms.
  • Gentle before forceful. A drill is genuinely the last resort, not the first idea.
  • Comfortable near a busy crossing point. Crowds and traffic don't change how carefully we work.
  • We take homes just as seriously. A residential job never gets less attention than a commercial one.
  • Honest from the start about scope. Spare keys and access-system work go elsewhere.
  • Reachable at any hour. Rush-hour crowds or a quiet midnight riverside, it's the same to us.

Common Questions

The Trial That Backfired

Did Henry VIII's divorce case really get heard on this exact site?

Yes, at a specially convened legatine court that opened here on 31 May 1529.

What actually happened at the hearing?

Catherine of Aragon appeared in person and appealed directly and movingly to Henry, and the court adjourned that summer without a ruling.

Did the friary itself survive much longer afterwards?

Not really. It was swept up in the dissolution of the monasteries less than a decade later, in 1538.

A Theatre Built In The Ruins

Did Shakespeare's own company genuinely own part of the old friary?

Yes. His company bought the former refectory outright in 1608 and used it as their theatre.

Was Shakespeare personally involved in that purchase?

He was one of seven original shareholders in the reorganised playhouse.

Did the theatre earn well compared with the Globe?

By most accounts, yes, bringing in noticeably more than the open-air Globe thanks to higher ticket prices.

Booking In Blackfriars

Which streets does EC4V actually cover?

The riverside stretch around Blackfriars station and the lanes leading up towards Ludgate Hill.

Do you work on offices as well as older buildings here?

Yes, this postcode is a genuine mix of the two, and we treat each on its own terms.

Can you reach a lockout near the river during rush hour?

Yes, though the final stretch may be covered on foot given how busy the bridge approach gets.

Is weekend cover realistic this close to the Thames?

Yes, weekends included, regardless of what the tide or the footfall is doing.

Do you handle flats as well as commercial premises here?

We do, though offices and shops account for the greater share of our callouts here.

What if my building has its own out-of-hours arrangements?

Walk us through them and we'll follow that process rather than guess at it.

A trial ended one era here. A theatre began another. We handle the doors either way.
