Why Ludgate Hill Is Different
A name borrowed from a king nobody can prove existed
According to a chronicle written over a thousand years after the fact, a pre-Roman British king named Lud founded his original settlement right where this street now climbs, and was later buried at the gate that took his name. The story comes from Geoffrey of Monmouth, a 12th-century cleric whose history of Britain modern scholars treat as entertaining fiction rather than reliable fact. Most historians favour a considerably plainer explanation instead, that the name simply describes a flood gate or Fleet gate, since the River Fleet once flowed directly across the bottom of this hill.
Whatever the truth, the legend had real staying power. When Elizabeth I had the gate rebuilt in 1586, under architect William Kerwin, she made sure her own statue occupied the more prominent west-facing side, visible to everyone arriving in the City. Lud, by comparison, found himself quietly relegated to the less visible eastern face alongside his sons. Her statue actually survives today, relocated to a church on Fleet Street after the gate itself came down.
A Gate That Doubled As A Prison
Ludgate wasn't purely ceremonial. For centuries it also functioned as a genuine debtors' prison, holding people unable to pay what they owed rather than simply letting traffic through. Thirty inmates were recorded there in 1554 alone. That same year brought the gate its most dramatic moment, when Sir Thomas Wyatt's armed rebellion reached its climax directly at this spot, hundreds of rebels arriving at the gate itself before the uprising finally collapsed. The gate stood for roughly two more centuries after that before finally being demolished in 1760. We're concerned with something considerably calmer today. A lock on Ludgate Hill gets fixed properly, whatever legendary king or historical rebellion happens to be attached to the street outside.

What A Legend Leaves Behind Once The Gate Is Gone
A disputed king, a surviving statue, and a prison nobody remembers
Few streets carry a name this genuinely contested, let alone one tied to a king most historians doubt ever lived at all. Fewer still can claim their old gate doubled as a prison.
King Lud's own legend and its likely true origin are explored by this account of the gate's history. The gate's time as a prison, Wyatt's rebellion included, is covered further by this record of Ludgate itself.
Our own standards stay considerably plainer than that history. Whether a lock works is the only thing that actually concerns us.

Why People Call Us
What Ludgate Hill tenants and residents rely on us for
- Current condition decides everything. What a building used to trade in makes no difference to us.
- We avoid damage wherever possible. A drill appears only when genuinely nothing else will do.
- Visitor crowds are nothing new to us. Steady footfall near a landmark doesn't change our pace.
- Flats aren't treated as lesser work. A residential callout gets the same care as any commercial one.
- Our boundaries are clearly drawn. Duplicate keys and access-system wiring go elsewhere.
- Hour of day doesn't limit us. Rush-hour chaos or a silent 3am street, both get the same answer.
